3 New Year Actions to Get You Out of Overwhelm

Forget the resolutions. Forget control and discipline, too much work. Instead try experimenting. ~Dale Dauten

It’s day 5 of 2011 already. And no doubt, your email inbox is already beginning to be overwhelmed by the emails reminding you about setting your resolutions [or intentions] for this year. Well…this is not one of them.

According to Dictionary.com, the definition of resolution is a formal expression of intention. Well, isn’t that great – an intention, but if you want to build your business, you need to DO something -action.

We have all heard that resolutions usually go by the way side before the end of January (if we get that far).

Here are 3 action steps that you can take today:

1. Make a decision.
Seems pretty simple, right? You would be surprised how many people get stuck on this one. They are torn between so many options that it just about paralyzes them to make a decision. They are afraid they will make the wrong choice. Well here is the deal, you will not know if it is the wrong choice until you decide. It might be. I recently heard Carrie Wilkerson, The Barefoot Executive say “fail fast, fail close together and then your successes come close together.”

2. Get an accountability buddy.
An accountability buddy is someone who you can bounce ideas off of, provide you support, share resources. When you look for someone to be your accountability buddy, look for someone who WILLhold you accountable, not just be your friend and say “that’s ok.” You may not want to choose a family member or close friend as they may allow you use your excuses to keep you from action. A great place to find someone is in a networking group in which you are already a member. It is likely in this group that you both have similar goals.

3. Take a break.
I bet you did not see that coming. This is an action list and now I am telling you to take a break. There is a saying “you can cut quicker with a sharp knife than a dull one.” And the same holds true for taking action. Book yourself a massage, pedicure, manicure or some other pampering activity. While you are getting your pampering, you might surprise yourself with the ideas that you have about your business. This can be one of the best places to come up with ideas and solutions – you are not pre-occupied by emails, the phone, text messages or interruptions. You are completely free to just let yourself relax, and I promise you, the ideas will be abundant.
